The honest breakdown of intimate laser hair removal
If you’re new to intimate laser hair removal, the terminology is genuinely confusing. Bikini? Brazilian? Hollywood? What’s the difference, and which one is right for you? Bikini laser hair removal is one of our most popular treatments at The Laser Base, and the questions are the same every time. So here’s the honest, no-euphemism breakdown of the three styles, what each involves, and how to know which suits you.
Bikini Line is the most modest of the three. It removes hair from around the edges of your underwear or thong line — think a tidy up rather than a full clear-out. The natural hair in the centre is left intact. It’s the perfect option for clients who want to look neat in swimwear or lingerie, prefer a more natural look, or are testing the waters with intimate laser before going further. We can also include a free perianal treatment at the same appointment if you’d like.
Brazilian sits somewhere in the middle. It removes all the hair from underneath, but leaves a strip or triangle of hair at the front — a defined shape (landing strip, triangle, or your preference) with everything else gone. The important thing to know about Brazilian is that you’ll need to maintain the shape yourself between appointments. We treat around the shape you keep, so if the strip has been shaved unevenly, it changes what we can target. We can’t reshape it mid-course. Brazilian is best for clients who want low maintenance but not fully bare, are happy to keep the shape at home, and like a defined, deliberate look. Free perianal treatment can be included if requested.
Hollywood is everything off. Hollywood laser removes all the hair from the front and underneath — completely bare. It’s the lowest-maintenance intimate laser option because there’s no shape to preserve, and it’s our most popular intimate treatment by a distance. Once you’re in the maintenance phase, you barely have to think about it. It’s the option for clients who want the smoothest, lowest-maintenance result, or feel more comfortable without any hair in the area at all. Free perianal treatment can be added if you’d like it.
Beyond the aesthetic, most clients come to us for one of these reasons: ingrown hairs (the bikini area is the classic ingrown hair zone, and laser dramatically reduces them), skin irritation from shaving, waxing or hair removal creams, hormonal hair growth (many clients experience persistent bikini area growth linked to hormonal conditions), the convenience of not needing daily maintenance, holiday and swimwear confidence, and weddings or special events — starting a course early means smooth skin on the day.
The bikini area has some unique factors compared to legs or underarms. Sessions are typically 6–8 weeks apart initially, extending as hair reduces. Most clients need an average of 12 sessions for optimal results in this area — more than the 6–8 required for less dense areas, because bikini hair is denser and often hormonally driven. Once your initial course is complete, most clients need around 3 maintenance sessions per year to keep results. Typical long-term results sit around 70-90% permanent reduction. Results vary based on hair type, skin type and any hormonal factors.
On suitability: laser works by targeting pigment in the hair, so it works brilliantly on black and dark brown hair. It cannot effectively treat blonde, grey, white, or very fine peach fuzz hair. Your technician will assess your hair type at your consultation. On skin tone: at The Laser Base we use a triple wavelength system (Alexandrite, Diode and Nd:YAG) that safely treats every skin tone on the Fitzpatrick scale, including darker skin where older machines struggled. Before treatment we use a hair and skin scanner so we can tailor your settings to your exact skin and hair type.
Prep is simple: shave the area 12-24 hours before your appointment, avoid waxing/threading/plucking in the weeks leading up, no sun exposure or self-tan on the area for 2-4 weeks beforehand, and come in with clean skin — no lotions, oils or perfumes.
