There are plenty of ways to manage unwanted hair, and no single method suits absolutely everybody. Shaving, waxing and laser hair removal all have their place. They work in very different ways, though, and they ask for very different levels of upkeep.
Shaving: quick, cheap and constant
Shaving is probably the most convenient option in the short term. It’s fast, it’s inexpensive and you can do it at home whenever you need to.
The catch is that it only cuts the hair at skin level. Regrowth therefore appears quickly. If you shave often, that cycle of shaving, stubble and shaving again can get frustrating. Razor rash and ingrown hairs make it more frustrating still.
Waxing: smoother for longer, but on a schedule
Waxing pulls the hair out at the root. Your skin generally stays smoother for longer than it does after shaving.
However, you need enough regrowth for the wax to grip before your next appointment. You also have to repeat the treatment regularly. Some people are perfectly happy with that routine. Others grow tired of planning appointments around their hair growth.
How is laser hair removal different?
Laser hair removal takes a different approach. The goal isn’t simply to remove the hair you can see today. Instead, laser energy targets the hair follicle itself, with the aim of long-term hair reduction.
It does ask for commitment at the beginning. Your hairs grow in different cycles, so you’ll need a course of treatments. You’ll also need to come back at the intervals your practitioner suggests. The trade-off arrives as your course progresses. Many people find their hair grows back finer, slower and far more sparsely.
What the real benefit feels like
This is often where the biggest benefit shows up, and it isn’t always one dramatic moment in the mirror. More often, it’s realising you haven’t thought about shaving your legs all week. Or that the usual bikini-line irritation simply hasn’t happened. Or that you no longer plan hair removal around what you want to wear.
What about cost?
Cost works in a similar way. Shaving looks cheaper because each individual purchase is small. Waxing spreads the cost across recurring appointments. Laser asks for more upfront. Its aim, though, is to cut right down on how much hair-removal upkeep you need in future.
So which should you choose?
The best method depends on your hair, your lifestyle and what actually bothers you about your current routine. If shaving or waxing works perfectly well for you, there may be no reason to change a thing.
Are you tired of constant regrowth, irritation or ingrown hairs? Perhaps you’re simply tired of thinking about hair removal so often. In that case, laser may be worth exploring.
