Laser Hair Removal Preparation and Aftercare: What You Need to Know

What happens during your laser appointment matters. So does what happens before and afterwards. Good laser hair removal preparation and aftercare helps us treat you safely. It also gives your practitioner the best possible conditions to work with.

Shaving before your appointment

Before your appointment, your practitioner will usually ask you to shave the treatment area. Always follow the guidance they give you for your particular area, because it can vary.

Shaving removes the visible hair above the skin. It leaves the hair inside the follicle, which is exactly what the laser needs to target. Between appointments, please avoid waxing, tweezing and epilating. Those methods pull the hair out at the root, so the laser has nothing left to work with.

Tell us if anything has changed

It’s just as important to tell us if anything has changed since we last saw you. New medication, a course of antibiotics or an update to your medical history can all be relevant. So can certain skincare products.

Even if you’re not sure something matters, mention it to the girls anyway. We’d far rather know and make the decision together.

Sun exposure and tanning matter too

Recent sun exposure, tanning and fake tan are another important part of the conversation. Please be honest about holidays, time spent in the sun or any change in your skin. Nobody here will judge you. We would much rather adapt or move your appointment than take an unnecessary risk with your skin.

What to expect after treatment

Afterwards, your practitioner will talk you through the aftercare for the area we’ve treated. That advice depends on where you’ve had treatment and how your skin has reacted on the day.

Some temporary redness or warmth is normal. Stick to the advice your practitioner gives you. Please don’t add new products or treatments to the area without checking with us first.

Why your hair seems to keep growing

You might notice hairs still appearing in the days after your appointment. This is often part of the shedding process, as treated hairs gradually work their way out of the follicle. Resist the urge to tweeze or wax them. Instead, let the process happen naturally.

If you’re unsure, just ask

The most important rule is a simple one. If you’re unsure, ask. Shaving, medication, skincare, sun exposure, something that’s happened since your last session — nothing is too small to mention. You are never wasting our time by checking.
