Gender Affirming Care & Laser Hair Removal

Gender affirming Laser

Laser hair removal can be an important part of gender affirming care for many people. For some individuals, reducing or removing hair in certain areas can help them feel more comfortable and confident in their body during or after transition. Treatment goals vary widely depending on the person's identity, transition journey and long-term plans, which is why every treatment plan at The Laser Base is completely personalised.

We're part of the LGBTQIA+ friendly directory. We are also partners with Gaydio and regularly feature on their radio station and online features.

A Personalised Approach

Every Journey Is Different

Everyone's experience with gender identity and transition is unique.

Some clients seek laser hair removal to remove hair in areas that feel uncomfortable or dysphoric, while others may wish to shape or manage hair growth in specific areas. Our goal is to provide a safe, supportive and judgement-free environment where each client feels comfortable discussing their needs and goals. Every treatment plan is designed individually based on your preferences and long-term plans.

Hormones, Surgical Preparation, Guidelines & and Plans

Hormones

Hormone therapy can influence hair growth patterns and may affect how hair responds to laser treatments.

During consultation we may ask about:

  • Whether you are currently taking hormone therapy
  • Medications previously taken
  • Start dates and any changes to treatment

This helps us understand how hair growth may change during treatment.

Surgical History

If you have had or are planning gender affirming surgery, this information may influence your treatment plan.

We may ask about:

  • Surgeries already completed
  • Surgeries planned in the future
  • Approximate dates of procedures

This information is important because some surgical procedures require specific hair removal preparation, and laser treatment timing may need to be coordinated with surgical plans.

Surgical Preparation

For some genital reconstruction procedures, surgeons may require permanent hair removal in specific areas before surgery.

Treatment plans and timelines may vary depending on:

  • Surgical method
  • Surgeon requirements
  • Surgery dates

This will always be discussed privately and respectfully during consultation.

Surgeon Guidelines

Some surgeons provide specific instructions for hair removal before surgery.

During consultation we may ask about:

  • Surgeon recommendations
  • Areas that require treatment
  • Treatment deadlines before surgery

This allows us to plan your treatment schedule appropriately.

Your Journey

Understanding Your Goals

To ensure treatment is tailored to you, we may discuss:

  • Your transition journey so far
  • Previous hair removal methods used
  • Your personal goals and expectations
  • Areas that are particularly important to you

Everyone's journey is different, and we take a case-by-case approach to treatment planning.

Personalised Plans

Every client receives a fully personalised treatment plan.

Laser settings, treatment areas and session timing are adjusted based on:

  • Hair type
  • Skin type
  • Transition goals
  • Surgical preparation if required

If surgery is planned, treatments may be scheduled carefully to support surgical preparation timelines. Our aim is always to provide safe, respectful and supportive care.

Trans Men

Laser Hair Removal for
Trans Men

While hormone therapy often encourages increased hair growth, some trans men still choose laser hair removal for certain areas. Common reasons include:

Managing Hair in Specific Areas

Removing hair in areas that may cause gender dysphoria.

Hair Removal Before Surgery

Laser may be required before certain gender affirming surgical procedures.

Managing Hormonal Hair Changes

Hormone therapy can change hair growth patterns, sometimes creating unwanted hair in specific areas.

Preparing Donor or Surgical Sites

Hair removal may sometimes be required for surgical preparation.

Suitability

Will It Work On Your Hair?

Laser targets pigment in the hair follicle. Here's what works best:

Suitable Hair Types

Best results
  • Black hair
  • Brown hair
  • Dark blonde hair
  • Dark red hair

Mixed hair colours? Laser will pick up hairs with enough pigment and leave any without behind. Most clients see excellent results even with some lighter hairs.

Not Suitable

Insufficient pigment
  • Grey/white hair
  • Bleach blonde hair
  • Light red hair
  • Very fine vellus hair

These hair types lack the melanin required for laser to effectively target the follicle. Electrolysis may be a better alternative for non-pigmented hair.
