Can You Have Laser Hair Removal In Summer? (Copy)
The honest answer most clinics won't give you.
Let's clear something up, because there's a lot of half-information floating around: you don't have to be pale to have laser hair removal. You can have a tan but we need it to not be too fresh. That's a really important distinction, and it's the one most clinics either skip over or get wrong. So here's exactly how it works at The Laser Base.
Real tans: yes, BUT with timing
If you've been on holiday, sat out in the garden, or your skin has caught some sun on the school run — you can absolutely still be treated. We just need your skin to settle back to its baseline.
The rule: wait 2-4 weeks from your last sun exposure before your appointment.
That's 2-4 weeks (dependant on skin type, how tanned you are and any burnt skin) with no direct sun on the area we're treating. The reason isn't about how dark you look in the mirror — it's about the melanin still active in your skin from that recent UV exposure. The laser targets melanin in the hair, and if your skin is still 'switched on' from a recent tan, the laser can't safely distinguish between the two.
Two weeks is the sweet spot (unless we say otherwise). Long enough for your skin to settle, short enough that you're not putting your whole treatment course on hold every time you see a bit of sunshine.
Fake tan: a hard NO
This is the one that catches people out, and we have to turn clients away for it more often than you'd think. So please, please read this part.
You cannot have any fake tan on your skin at your laser appointment. None. Not the morning's spritz. Not the gradual moisturiser you've been building up. Not last night's mousse 'because it'll fade.'
Fake tan sits on the surface of your skin and contains pigment the laser will pick up on.
That can mean:
- A reaction or burn on the surface of your skin
- A treatment that doesn't work properly because the energy is being absorbed by the wrong target
- Visible pigmentation marks where the tan was darker in patches
We ask all clients to come to their appointment fully fake-tan-free — and that includes any tinted moisturiser, gradual tan body lotion, or 'subtle glow' product. If you've used any of those, exfoliate them off in advance.
If you arrive with even a trace of fake tan, we will reschedule your appointment. We know that's frustrating — and we'd genuinely rather lose the slot than risk your skin.
Sunbeds: even more strictly
Sunbeds are worse than natural sun, not better. The dose of UV is more concentrated, and the melanin response in your skin is more aggressive. The 2-week rule applies, and we'd actually rather you didn't use sunbeds at all while you're going through a course of laser. Your skin is already working hard.
Why we're so strict
It would be easy to just laser anyone who walks through the door. Easier for everyone in the short term.
But if your skin tone isn't right for treatment that day, you don't get the results you came in for. Worse, you risk burns, pigmentation changes that can last months, and a course of treatment that fundamentally doesn't work.
We'd rather have an honest 5-minute conversation at the door and rebook you for next week than treat skin that isn't ready. Every single time.
One area where our technology helps
This is where having the right machine genuinely matters. Our Lumiere Elite uses three wavelengths — 755nm Alexandrite, 810nm Diode and 1064nm Nd:YAG. The Nd:YAG wavelength is the safest option for darker skin tones because it bypasses the upper layers of skin where most melanin sits, and targets the hair follicle deeper down. It's why we can treat all skin types safely — from Fitzpatrick I right through to VI.
What it does NOT do is let us treat a recent fake tan, or skin that's still flushed from a sunny weekend. The 2-week rule applies regardless of which wavelength we'd use.
The takeaway
- Recent sun? Wait 2 weeks, then come in.
- Fake tan on right now? Reschedule. Come back fake-tan-free.
- Sunbeds? Try to avoid, especially mid-course. The 2-week rule applies here too.
- Naturally darker skin? Welcome. Our triple wavelength tech is built for you.
