Gym, Sweat and Laser Hair Removal
The 48-hour rule every active client needs to know…
There's a particular type of client we see a lot at The Laser Base. You train four or five times a week. You've got a packed work diary. You've finally found a 6pm slot for laser — and you're already mentally adding the spin class straight after. We need to have a word.
Why we ask you to skip the gym
Laser hair removal works by delivering targeted heat into the hair follicle. That heat doesn't disappear the moment you step off the treatment couch — the skin around the follicle stays warmer, slightly inflamed and more sensitive for hours afterwards. Sometimes a day or two.
Layer a workout on top of that and you've got:
- More heat — your body temperature rises, and the treated skin gets hotter on top of an already-warm area
- Sweat — which traps bacteria against freshly treated skin and can cause irritation, breakouts, or in worse cases, folliculitis
- Friction — gym leggings, sports bras, weight benches, mats. All rubbing against skin that's already in recovery
- Increased blood flow — which prolongs the redness and can extend your downtime by days
None of that is dangerous. But it's the difference between settling down quickly and being uncomfortable for a week.
The 48-hour rule
Here's what we recommend to every active client:
Day of treatment: Rest. No gym, no run, no hot yoga, no sauna. A walk is fine.
24 hours after: Light activity is OK if your skin feels fine. Gentle yoga, stretching, easy walk. Skip anything that makes you seriously sweat.
48 hours after: Back to full training. HIIT, weights, spin, hot yoga, the lot — as long as the treated area has settled.
Saunas and steam rooms: Wait 48 hours minimum. The heat and bacteria combination is the one we see causing problems most often.
Pools: 48 hours. Chlorine plus sensitive skin is rough.
Working laser into your training week
The simplest fix is to book laser on a deload day or rest day. If you train Mon–Fri and rest Saturday and Sunday, a Friday evening appointment gives you the whole weekend for your skin to settle.
If you train every day, look at your weekly split. Got a leg day Monday? Book your bikini or leg laser for Sunday evening or skip leg day Tuesday — don't put them next to each other. Underarm laser? Avoid heavy upper body the next day.
Most clients work this out within their first couple of sessions. It just takes one sweaty regret to remember.
A note on what to wear to your appointment
If you're coming straight from work or you've got somewhere to be afterwards, loose-fitting clothes are your friend. Tight gym leggings or shapewear pressing against freshly treated bikini, leg or stomach skin for hours afterwards is one of the easiest things to avoid.
Loose cotton joggers, an oversized t-shirt, no underwire if we've treated underarms. Simple stuff.
One more thing: hydration matters
This one gets overlooked. Drinking properly in the 24 hours before and after laser supports your skin's recovery, reduces redness and keeps follicle response strong. Active clients tend to be better hydrated than most — but if you've trained hard, replace what you've lost properly before treatment.
So when's the best time to book?
If training is a fixed part of your life, we'd rather work around it than ask you to compromise. Book on the day that gives you the longest gap before your next intense session, and you'll barely notice you've been treated.
