The Shedding Phase Explained

Your hair is "falling out" after laser and that's a good thing!

You walk out of your laser session, give it a week or two, and suddenly… your hair seems to be everywhere. Your razor's catching loose hairs. You're scrubbing the shower and pulling out clumps. You're convinced something has gone wrong.

Don't panic. This is exactly what's meant to happen. And once we explain it, you'll realise it's actually one of the clearest signs your laser session has worked.

This is the shedding phase. Here's what's going on.

The hair growth cycle — the bit your laser tech has been working around

Every single hair on your body is in one of four phases at any given moment:

1. Anagen — the active growth phase. Hair is firmly anchored, packed with melanin, growing. This is when laser works best.

2. Catagen — a short transition phase. Hair detaches from the blood supply but stays in the follicle. Lasts a few days.

3. Telogen — the resting phase. The follicle is dormant. Laser has no effect here.

4. Exogen — the shedding phase. The dead hair is pushed out and falls.

The crucial thing: not all your hairs are in the same phase at the same time. At any given moment, only about 20% of your hair is in the anagen phase — which is why we space sessions 4–8 weeks apart (dependant on client and body area), so each session catches a different batch of hairs in their active growth phase.

What actually happens during a laser session

When the laser pulse hits a hair in the anagen phase, the melanin in the hair shaft absorbs the energy, converts it to heat, and that heat damages the follicle below. The hair itself isn't immediately destroyed — it's the follicle that's been disabled.

The hair shaft is now essentially a dead hair attached to a damaged follicle that no longer has a blood supply. It needs to come out. But your body doesn't expel it instantly — it takes 1 to 3 weeks for the natural process to push it free.

That's the shedding phase.

What you'll actually see and feel

Typical timeline after a session:

  • Days 1–3: Slight redness around the follicles. Hair still looks present.

  • Days 4–7: Things start moving. You may notice tiny bumps that look like a fresh shave but feel coarser. These are dead hairs being pushed up by the follicle.

  • Days 7–21: Active shedding. Hairs come away when you shower, when you rub on body lotion, sometimes spontaneously. Some clients describe brushing their hand over their leg and watching the hair come away. This is the bit that catches people out — it can look dramatic.

  • Weeks 3–4: Treated area appears smooth. Hair count noticeably down compared to before treatment.

  • Weeks 4–6: A new batch of hairs (the ones that were in telogen or catagen during your last session) start to grow through. This is normal — it's a different cohort. They'll be caught at your next session.

What it is NOT

The shedding phase is NOT regrowth. This is the most common mistake clients make.

The hairs falling out are the hairs we treated — they're being expelled. The hairs that appear a few weeks later are different hairs, from follicles that were dormant at your last session.

If you think your laser hasn't worked because hair is coming back, look at the timeline. If new hair is appearing 4–6 weeks after treatment, that's the next cycle's hairs entering anagen — and they'll be treated at your next session.

If you think your laser hasn't worked because the hairs are falling out — congratulations, it's working perfectly.

What you should and shouldn't do during the shedding phase

✅ Do:

  • Gently exfoliate the area in the shower from day 5 onwards (loofah, exfoliating mitt, exfoliating wash) — this helps the dead hairs come away

  • Moisturise daily with Aloe Vera (we sell pure aloe in clinic) to keep the skin in good condition

  • Shave if you need to (the hairs that are shedding will come away during shaving anyway — this won't affect your results) we just ask you to shave as little as possible for up to 2 weeks

❌ Don't:

  • Pluck, wax, epilate or thread the shedding hairs out (this disrupts the follicle and can disturb your next session's targeting)

  • Pick or scratch the area

  • Panic when the shedding looks heavy — it means the session worked

Why understanding this matters for your course

Here's the thing about laser: most clients see the most dramatic results between sessions 3 and 5. Before that, the asynchronous nature of the hair cycle means you're constantly catching different batches of hairs — and the visible reduction is gradual.

Knowing how the cycle works helps you trust the process. Each session is doing its job, even when it doesn't feel like it. The shedding phase between sessions is the proof.

Most clients complete a full course at 6–12 sessions, with around 85–90% reduction by the end (most commonly somewhere between 80-100% dependant on the individual). The hair that does come back is typically much finer, lighter and slower-growing.

One last thing about heavy shedders

If you're seeing dramatic shedding — almost more hair than seems physically possible — you're not unusual. Some clients shed more visibly than others. It can depend on:

  • Hair density to begin with (coarse, dense hair sheds more visibly)

  • Hair colour (darker hair is more visible during shedding)

  • The area treated (large areas like legs always look more dramatic)

  • How well-hydrated and exfoliated the skin is Dramatic shedders often see the best long-term results. Take it as a good sign.
