Laser Hair Removal with PCOS, HRT & Hormonal Hair Growth
An Honest Guide to Laser Hair Removal with PCOS, HRT or Hormonal Hair Growth
One of the most common questions we hear at The Laser Base is a version of this: “I have a hormonal condition, will laser actually work for me?” The short answer is yes, in most cases, absolutely! But hormonal hair growth does behave differently to typical hair growth, and we think you deserve a genuinely honest explanation rather than a vague reassurance. So here it is.
Why hormones affect hair growth
Hormones, particularly androgens like testosterone, directly influence hair follicle activity, growth cycles, thickness and distribution. When androgen levels are elevated or fluctuating, as they are in conditions like PCOS, or during HRT or the menopause transition, hair follicles can be persistently stimulated in ways that differ from standard hair cycles.
This does not make laser ineffective. It means the approach needs to be realistic, individualised and honest about maintenance.
PCOS and Laser Hair Removal
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is one of the most common hormonal conditions we treat at our Manchester and Harrogate clinics. Androgen-driven hair growth on the face, stomach and other areas is one of the most distressing symptoms for many people with PCOS and one where laser can make a genuinely significant difference.
Laser works by targeting the follicle directly, regardless of what is stimulating it hormonally. Most of our clients with PCOS see excellent, meaningful results. A few things worth knowing:
Hair growth cycles can be more irregular with PCOS, so session spacing may be adjusted slightly
Maintenance sessions are typically needed more regularly, but this is not always the case as many PCOS clients see a high percentage of hair reduction
Results still build progressively and are life-changing for the majority of clients
HRT and Laser Hair Removal
Whether you are taking HRT for menopause management or as part of a gender-affirming transition, laser works very well alongside it. The key consideration is timing: in the early stages of HRT, changing hormone levels can shift hair growth patterns. We always discuss this at consultation so you have accurate expectations from the outset, and we plan your treatment schedule accordingly.
Menopause and Perimenopause
Hormonal changes during menopause and perimenopause commonly bring new or increased facial hair growth, particularly around the chin and jawline. This is one of the fastest-growing areas of enquiry we see, and one we treat very effectively. It is far more common than many people realise, and there is absolutely no need to simply manage it indefinitely.
What to expect at your consultation
If you have a hormonal condition, we will always discuss this thoroughly at your consultation. We will be completely honest about realistic outcomes, likely session numbers and maintenance requirements specific to your situation. There are no one-size-fits-all answers here, but there are genuinely excellent results available and we will help you understand exactly what that looks like for you.
